From the Author's Note of The Week from Heaven and Hell

I told my family that my goal was to provide a fitting tribute to an exceptional young man who deserved to live out his life, a good person who had much to offer this somewhat warped world...The tribute moves far beyond our beloved son, however, and the effect of the tribute would be diluted if any part of the story of our faith, our family, our friends, and our community was not included. It is a devastating and incredibly sad story, and the tragedy that struck that beautiful May afternoon remains firmly fixed in the realm of disbelief.

I pray that the story of the powers that brought us through it is uplifting in some way to each of you. It could never be a happy story, but I believe it can be a positive one.

The Week from Heaven and Hell eBook Duke Southard Reviews

Not an easy read, in fact heartbreaking. Duke Southard captures perfectly the huge range of emotions that engulfed him and his family during the week that his son died and his daughter married. As a memoir author myself, I understand how difficult this is, and he succeeded.
This story tells a remarkable story about the sorrowful journey one family faces during a tragic time in their lives. The author shares the pain and emotion so well through his words that you feel the pain they were in and you sense how strong their faith is during this time. Heart wrenching with touches of humor and warm memories of a wonderful young man and a life cut entirely too short. I felt honored to be able to read about such a personal journey.
This book draws upon our fears of death and emotions of tragic loss while at the same time allows us to embrace and celebrate life. There are pages where I cried and yet at the end I am left with hope and appreciation. Duke Southard takes us on a journey - his journey - where if told by anyone else and in any other manner may leave a reader with only dispair. But in Duke's words, love and respect emanate from every page. It is a story of death. But it is much more a story of life and lives. It is a story of a life worth living and fondly remembered. Having read this book more than once, I feel inspired, uplifted and more prepared for life and death. You don't need to know Gary or Duke to appreciate this book. But once you read it, you will know much about them, and will be glad that you do.
Read this book! Duke Southard tells the tragic yet insightful story in a way that grips the reader from the first page and never stops. It's a story of a family that endures incredible loss while heroically trying to embrace what should be one of the happiest times of their lives. Duke Southard succeeds in much more than explaining the events during challenging times; he offers a critical examination and rarely discussed look into how he confronted his own emotions and how his thoughts and actions affected his family, his ability to accept loss, and his struggle to embrace the things that must be cherished even during the darkest times. I guarantee this book will make any reader examine their own life and priorities. It sure did for me and I'm thankful for it.
Any death of a loved one is sorrowful. But the death of a loved one out of the "expected timeline" is tragic. For those who have lost a young spouse or child, Duke Southard's book lays out an honest portrayal of one man's shock, anger, bitterness, and acceptance of the death of his son. It is a story of courage to move through the phases of grief and be able to put such tragic grief in a place of safety to accept comfort from family and friends and then move to give love to his daughter. I salute the writer for telling his story so realistically and yet gently. Ethel Lee-Miller author, Thinking of Miller Place A Memoir of Summer Comfort
This is a wonderful book about one man's feelings when he looses a son on the eve of his daughter's wedding. For anyone who has lost a grown child this book is a must to read. I can't imagine having to face such a thing. Duke shows you how he handles this.
I recommend this to everyone.
This book was written by my friends' cousin, so I was somewhat familiar with the events that happened. It was interesting to read Duke's version of this tragic story.
Duke is a talented writer but this book required much more than talent. It required so much courage to allow us to read of nine very personal days of his and Barbara's life.
